NSW: Meeting of police commissioners to address guns issue=2

Mr Moroney later told journalists there had been a "proliferation of handguns" in NSW.

He said he would meet with Det Supt Begg tomorrow to discuss staffing levels in herfirearms trafficking unit.

"I have had calls for an extension of the unit, I will discuss that with her ... andI will be reporting to the minister tomorrow afternoon on the approaches we will be adopting,"

Mr Moroney said.

He said illegal gun smuggling was a "trade in death" and he said police would haveto work with cultural groups to break down the gun-toting mentality.

"I am concerned that there are some members of this community who believe that thepossession and the carriage of firearms is something akin to a personal (accessory) likea belt or a tie," Mr Moroney said.

"We have to work with a whole variety of community groups and cultural groups thatbreaks down that particular view."
